The Residual Stress Measurement Workshop 2009 organised jointly by VEQTER Limited and the University of Bristol took place at the University's Queen's building from the 22nd - 25th September.
Experts from America and Europe travelled to Bristol to give lectures on a range of techniques such as X-ray, Neutron and Synchotron Diffraction, Contour and Slitting Methods and Ring Core, as well as VEQTER's directors giving lectures on Deep Hole Drilling (DHD) and Incremental Centre Hole Drilling (ICHD). The workshop attendees were treated to lab demonstrations on X-ray diffraction and Ring Core by the University of Manchester's Dr Judith Shackleton and Siemens' Dr Manfred Wrobel, while demonstrations of DHD and ICHD were given by VEQTER.
Following a morning of lectures on Wednesday, the group was taken to Engin-X, a dedicated materials engineering beamline facility
at ISIS, part of the Rutherford Appelton Laboratory, for a tour of the facility and a demonstration of the neutron diffractometer.
For many, one of the highlights of the week was the event dinner which took place at the idyllic Castle Inn Hotel in Castle Combe. It was a great opportunity for delegates, speakers and organisers to chat and network in a more informal setting as well as enjoy an exceptional meal, before returning to The Avon Gorge Hotel which overlooks Brunel's famous Clifton Suspension Bridge.
The conference was attended by representatives from all over the world from a variety of industries that included the Nuclear and Conventional Power and the Oil and Gas industries, as well as attracting delegates from academia. Delegates commented that they felt the workshop had been "very useful" and "very good value for money", with 100% of all attendees confirming that they would recommend the workshop to their colleagues.
Following the success of the 2009 workshop, VEQTER Limited looks forward to welcoming speakers and delegates from around the world once again for the next workshop scheduled for 2011.
Our next workshop is planned for September 2011.
