THE NEED

Knowledge of residual stress is critical. Regulators are now placing increasing demands on manufacturers and operators for higher levels of safety, whilst purchasers and end-users continually drive designers to seek reductions in capital and operating costs.

Therefore, a clear need exists for the design, manufacture and operation of component systems at peak efficiency (i.e. using minimum resources) with a guaranteed structural integrity.

In order to determine and hence guarantee the structural integrity of engineering components it is vital to have complete through-thickness knowledge of the residual stress levels to which the component is exposed; stresses are the main drivers in component structural failure.
